Discover the Power of One Light  | SOLD OUT

Join us for an exciting hands-on workshop on Saturday, April 4, as the Treasure Coast Photography Center launches the first class in our new Studio Lighting Master Class Series.

Studio lighting often appears complicated—multiple lights, modifiers, triggers, and technical settings. But great studio photography frequently begins with something far simpler: one light and thoughtful control of shadow.

In this introductory workshop, we will explore how a single light source paired with a V-Flat reflector can create compelling and dramatic portraits. By simplifying the lighting setup, photographers can focus on understanding how light shapes a subject and defines mood.

A Model with Character

Adding to the excitement of the afternoon is our guest model, Johnny “Ringo”—a pirate in his own right and promoter of a private brand of rum.

Johnny will arrive fully costumed as a swashbuckling pirate who might rival the legends of the high seas. His dramatic wardrobe, expressive personality, and distinctive look will provide the perfect subject for exploring dramatic portrait lighting.

The pirate theme offers rich opportunities to experiment with shadow, texture, and character-driven portraiture.

What You Will Learn

During this workshop, participants will explore:

• How to create professional portraits using one continuous light source
• Using a V-Flat reflector to control shadow and contrast
• Understanding light direction and light falloff
• Techniques for creating dramatic character portraits
• How small adjustments in light position transform a photograph

Because we will use continuous lighting, participants will be able to see changes in lighting in real time—making it easier to understand how light shapes the subject.

Who This Workshop Is For

This workshop is perfect for photographers who:

• Want to learn studio lighting fundamentals
• Have never photographed in a studio before
• Want to create stronger portraits with minimal equipment
• Are curious about how controlled lighting can elevate their photography

A Hands-On Learning Experience

Participants will have the opportunity to photograph the model while experimenting with light placement and reflector positioning. The goal is to help photographers gain confidence working in a studio environment while learning the principles that make portrait lighting effective.

Continue the Master Class Series

Participants will leave the workshop with a creative assignment designed to reinforce what they have learned. Each photographer will be encouraged to return to the studio and create their own portrait using a single light and a V-Flat, applying the techniques explored during the session.

Those who choose to continue the Studio Lighting Master Class Series will bring this image to the next class, where we will review the photographs together and discuss how different lighting choices shaped the final results.

This approach moves the learning beyond demonstration and into hands-on creative practice, helping photographers build both confidence and skill.
