Take control of your camera and unlock your creative potential in this two-part hands-on workshop designed for beginners ready to move beyond auto mode. Whether you’re using a DSLR or mirrorless camera, this workshop will teach you the foundational skills every photographer needs to shoot with confidence.

Part 1: Classroom Session – Understanding the Essentials

Location: Susan Broom Kilmer Branch St Lucie County Library – 101 Melody Lane, Ft Pierce, FL 34950

Time: September 6 1pm-3pm in the library meeting room 3pm-5pm downtown Ft Pierce

In this interactive lecture and demonstration session, you’ll learn:

  • How to Shoot in Manual Mode
    Understand the exposure triangle—ISO, shutter speed, and aperture—and how to use it to get the perfect exposure in any situation.
  • Focusing Modes Demystified
    Learn the differences between single, continuous, and manual focus, and when to use each to keep your subjects tack-sharp.
  • Metering Modes Explained
    Discover how your camera measures light and how to use spot, center-weighted, and matrix/evaluative metering for accurate exposure.
  • Intro to Composition
    Explore the basic rules of photographic composition, including the Rule of Thirds, leading lines, framing, and balance, to create more visually engaging images.

Part 2: Field Session – Practice in the Park

Location: Park adjacent to Kilmer Branch St Lucie County Library 
Time: 3pm-5pm

Put your new knowledge into practice in a beautiful outdoor setting. Guided by experienced photographers, you’ll:

  • Apply manual settings to real-world lighting conditions
  • Experiment with different focusing and metering techniques
  • Practice composing images with intention and creativity
  • Receive one-on-one coaching and immediate feedback
