Overview

Join photographers John Furlong and Mark Smith for a hands-on astrophotography workshop focused on capturing the Milky Way. Scheduled to coincide with one of the best nights of the year for galactic photography, this workshop will take place in Pine Glades Natural Area—a location scouted for its dark skies, accessibility, and strong compositional potential.

You’ll receive expert guidance on-camera settings, focusing in low light, and composing dynamic night sky images. Whether you’re new to astrophotography or refining your technique, this is an ideal opportunity to elevate your skills in the field.

Why September 20?

The selected date offers prime Milky Way visibility and nearly ideal conditions:

• Milky Way Visibility: 8:37 PM – 12:04 AM
• Moon Phase: 1% (New Moon)
• Sunset: Approximately 7:00 PM
• Recommended Orientation: Vertical with prominent galactic core

Backup Date: September 27

If skies are clouded on the 20th, the workshop will be rescheduled to the following Saturday:

• Milky Way Visibility: 8:28 PM – 11:36 PM
• Moon Phase: 28% (Crescent Moon – may enhance foreground illumination)
• Sunset: Approximately 7:12 PM

What You’ll Learn

• How to focus accurately in low-light conditions

Recommended Gear

• DSLR or mirrorless camera

• Bug spray, water, and weather-appropriate clothing

• This is a field-based workshop and is weather dependent.
• A go/no-go decision will be announced by noon on Saturday, September 20.
• If rescheduled, the workshop will take place on September 27.
• There are no restroom facilities at the location.
• Participants should come prepared for outdoor conditions, including insects.
