Take control of light and transform your photography with flash.

Whether you’re new to flash or looking to move beyond the basics, this hands-on workshop will teach you how to create natural-looking light, dramatic portraits, and creative special effects using both on-camera and off-camera flash.

Participants will begin by learning the fundamentals of on-camera flash using TTL (Through-the-Lens) metering. You’ll discover how TTL automatically adjusts flash output and how to use flash as both your primary light source and as subtle fill light to balance ambient light for natural-looking photographs.

Next, we’ll explore one of the most valuable techniques in flash photography—bounce flash. Rather than pointing the flash directly at your subject, you’ll learn how to bounce light from walls and ceilings to create soft, flattering illumination that eliminates harsh shadows and produces professional-looking indoor portraits.

From there, we’ll move into the exciting world of off-camera flash using wireless radio triggers. You’ll learn how to position your flash away from the camera for greater creative control while working in both TTL and Manual modes. Through guided exercises, you’ll photograph fellow participants and still-life subjects while learning how to shape and control light in virtually any environment.

The workshop then moves into the studio, where you’ll create classic portrait lighting using a single off-camera flash. Beginning with Rembrandt lighting, you’ll see how proper flash placement creates depth and dimension. You’ll then experiment with light modifiers including:

  • Reflectors
    Softboxes
    Combined reflector and softbox setups
  • These techniques demonstrate how simple changes can dramatically alter the mood and quality of your portraits.

The final portion of the workshop focuses on creative applications of flash. You’ll learn how to combine flash with slow shutter speeds to both freeze motion and capture motion blur. Working with a model on a swing, we’ll demonstrate rear-curtain synchronization and Nikon’s Repeating Flash (RPT) mode to produce striking motion effects.

We’ll conclude by creating bold, colorful studio images using multiple off-camera flashes fitted with colored gels, showing how light can become an artistic element rather than simply illumination.
